: : I've had one of my sulcata's for approx. four years
: : In that time she has never been given any animal protein
: : other than the unlucky bug she might of ate in the pen.
: : At 12" she displays about a quarter inch pyramiding
: : It's not the protein directly which causes pyramiding,
: : it's the rate of growth in captive animals, the protein
: : just acts as a steroid for the rate of growth.
: : Compair the rates of wild individuals vs. captive.
: : Smash a faster rate into a shorter span and bingo
: : you've got pyramiding.
: This is a gross oversimplification and in no way reflects the actual biological processes at work. For a really full discussion of this (which would really take far too long to go into here) I would suggest taking a look at the new edition of the Tortoise and Turtle Feeding Manual (and then following up on relevant references given therein).
