In Reply to: Russian tortoise, skin on his head is peeling "Help"! posted by Heather on August 21, 1999 at 15:11:21:
I have a Russian and a Sulcata Tortoise. My Sulcata tortoise started to peel so I brought it to the vet. He told me it was because he needed more protien in his diet. He recommended zucchini and squash (do not give them meat or monkey chow). He also told me to check my UVB/UVA full spectrum light source. These light bulbs usually need to be replaced after a year. The natural sunlight is very important to their health. If the tortoise is kept inside they need this light source for 10 hrs a day with vitamin supplements.
: I have had my tortiose for over a year now and this summer the skin around his head has started to peel. He seems healthy enough, can anyone tell me what is wrong with him? Is it a vitamin problem? As he is going to start winding down soon for hibernation I want to sort the problem out with his shedding. Any advise welcome. Thanks.
