I would like to suggest to those considering buying one or two spider / flat tailed tortoises / as a pet to reconsider. These tortoises have very resticted natural ranges which likely cannot endure the current level of collection. Instead, why not consider something captive bred such as Herman's, Greek, pancake, emys or stars or even something with larger natural populations like redfoots which are now available. It is outrageous to see the now de facto endangered tortoises denigrated to a point of a $450. price tag. The importers, exporters and jobbers will likely not stop this until some level of responsibilty overcomes us and we stop buying these. By now enough have arrived and thankfully ended up in breeding groups ensuring genetic survival, but enough already. Just think about what is happening! Its up to us this time, as the folly of CITES, the Madagascar government and the professional sector have once again proven their ineffectiveness aand gross mismanagement. Thanks!
