: Parasites and/or viral infections are often invisible to the tort owner until it's too late. Even very experienced keepers have lost torts because the tort looked completely healthy until right before it died. I'm sure someone who knows more about how the parasites and/or viral infections gradually affect the tort will chime in, but I do know that a vet is required to actually see the 'new patient' before he can prescribe any medication. After the initial visit, you can drop a fecal sample off every six months (or whatever your vet's recommended time frame is) for a check over.

: : How exactly do parasites affect a turtle? Is it necessary to actually take a tortoise in to get an exam, or can you simply get their poop tested? If the tortoise seems healthy otherwise and you've had it for a while, is it really necessary?
