There are so many neighborhood hazards you are going to be very lucky if you get it back. If you have street gutters the storm drains are like a bottomless pit, dogs love to sharpen their teeth on them, a neighbor's lawn mower, a car, 'finder's keeper's' type neighbors... The best time to find atortoise is in the late morning when they come out of hiding and want to bask to elevate their body temp. You should also post 'lost' signs for at least a block in all directions and possibly offer a reward if returned. Good luck.
