I kind of agree with everyone else to some extent.
They can be stressed but I know kids, and they
get bored quickly and he'll become old hat soon
enough. So I don't think they'll hover all over
him all day long. A water turtle may be a choice
but to me they're a lot of trouble with filters
and water changes etc... involved with aquariums.
A small tortoise might be OK, possibly you could
have a bigger pen for him during the summer with
you for a "vacation"! lol I have two leopard
geckos and feel that they are more fragile than
tortoises, and would not do well with lots of
people handling them, plus you have the shedding
every 2-3 weeks to check on, and usually they're
nocturnal and pretty boring during the day.
Something that has a variety of "habitats" to demonstrate
is tarantulas, the rain forest species to desert
species, you could do a few 10 gallon tanks with
very different landscape/decorations and it would
be cool. They're easy to take care of and very
interesting, not realy handlable though. Plus
side is no smell, even if you go away over the
weekend and leave them. They're really easy
if set up right. niki
