Keeping in mind that a tortoise is a very poor choice for a "classroom pet". They get easily stressed out with tons of people constantly around...as well as even supervised handling of tortoises could be a potential problem...for instance a Kleinmanni besides being fairly expensive, are small and fragile...tortoises do best when housed in optimal conditions with minimal handling and involvement by people. I'd suggest a water turtle...can live in a large tank and are probably more antical and exciting to watch...no doubt you have done some research and are knowledgeable and certainly mean well..but I'd have to say a gecko (leopard) might be a better choice...
