Hi,

First of all let me introduce : I keep boettgeri and hermanni (nominate form) till more than 10 years and breed them every year. I have 5 females and have got 61 eggs in the incubator now!!! I think that I would have more than 50 babies...

Yes, boettgeri is the hardiest hermanni subspecies and also the hardiest Testudo species!!! Some people would say that graeca, ... are hardier, but they don't live in Alaska or in Europe...
If you know how to do the difference between hermanni and other species, it would be easier.

T. h. hermanni : smaller subspecies, very dark in general. The plastron has 2 big black marks that are continuous. Under the eyes, there is a yellowish marks.

T. h. boettgeri : the bigger subspecies, generally more yellowish. The plastron has 2 stright black marks that are not continuous (like a black spot on each scute). Under the eyes, there is not a yellowish mark.

Regards

Denis Mosimann
