Dennis,
Thanks for your info, you were the only person
who really answered my question. I live in New
Jersey (USA) and need your advice of where to get
one of these tortoises. My e-mail address is
jpm101@worldspy.net.
Hope to here from you.
John
: Hi,
: First of all, the hardiest subspecies of T. hermanni is T. h. boettgeri (eastern subspecies). They are the hardiest tortoises I've never had (I keep them till 15 years...). I've had no time a problem with hibernation (they hibernate outdoor, also babies that are more than 3 years!).
: I reproduce myself this subspecies (and also T. h. hermanni) and have till now 57 eggs in the incubator and from only 5 females. One laid 1 single clutch, 3 laid 2 clutches and one laid 3 clutches (and one of those had 11 eggs that are all fertile!!!). My bredding succes with this species are over 85% of hatchlings.
: I think it's the easiest species to keep and they are, of course, beautiful tortoises.
: If you want more details (how to maintain them, how to buy the healthiest animals, ...) contact me per e-mail, I would try to answer you!
: Regards
: Denis Mosimann (Switzerland in Europe)
