: The leaves of the tomatoe and the white potatoe plants are, indeed, poisonous. Both of these plants are in the same family, along with nightshade and tobacco. The leaves contain solanine which is a trisaccaride organic compound. When the tomatoe was first introduced to Europe it quickly became known as the "Death Apple". This was do to the peoples' habit of cooking the leaves along with the fruit of a plant to add flavor and extra nutrients to the diet. The poison is NOT found in the tomatoe fruits or in ripe (non green) potatoes. Sprouts, leaves and stems are to be avoided.
