since it came up I would like to take this opportunity to point out that there is no evidence that hibernation is necessary for the health and well being of tortoises. There are some groups of tortoise keepers that claim that this is an easy and effortless task. Not so. Particularly if you live in an area that is not conducive to hibernation. If anyone decides to consider hibernation please be sure to talk to a vet or someone locally who has done this successfully and consistantly. Then weigh out the risks involved to determine if it necessary. Read and talk to as many people as possible before reaching a conclusion not just those who are the most voicterous. In the last year I've read too many post where someone has followed the advice of one expert only to loose their pet or run into some massive vet bills due to that very simple advice. That is the reason I would like to stress this point now. Also this litle reminder should trigger the idea that anyone entertaining this idea should start looking into it
now. Be sure to consider the necessity of hibernating.
