Thanks everyone for responding, here is some more info..
Since I aquired this tortoise I have kept him in my very large bathroom,
easy to clean up, with a full spectrum lighting setup. I did consult a vet
right away and was told that as long as he was eating well and active, and
didn't have pusy ozzing wounds that I could avoid antibiotics. I
was very concerned about disrupting the helpful digesting bacteria in his system.
Antibiotics can sometimes cause more harm than good.
I keep a very close eye on his behavior and feeding, he has always
been very active and eats like a pig, recently I have noticed that
many of the places his shell was injured are healing over with bone
and his scutes have very noticable growth rings.
As for feeding, he gets as varried a diet as I can muster up. in
addition to grasses, he gets kale, dandilion greens, broccoli, chard,
and any of the other tortoise approved greens I can find at the
local organic food store.
I think I will take him to my vet for an x-ray just to put my mind at
ease. I am not to terribly suspicious of URI, like I said no mucous
or yawning or gaping, just the nose whistle. Curious.
I would be interested to know the name of your herp vet, Kathy, its
always nice to have a backup.
I am going to start putting him outside to see how he does, now that
he seems to be recovering he should do alright. I'll keep an eye on him
to be sure he isn't too environmentally stressed out.
Thanks, guys!
Kisha
