In Reply to: Herpes-virus strains among tortoises posted by Charles on June 15, 2000 at 23:43:23:
: I was doing some reading on the tortoise-trust website, and I came across an article by someone who had lost most of their tortoise collection to a strain of the Herpes virus. I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience, and whether an owner is at risk of contracting the virus from an infected specimen (that could be hard to explain to a girlfriend!) Thanks, Charles
I'm not sure what the virus is, but I have some sulcata hatchlings that I had to temporarily house with my Russian tortoises until I could rebuild their enclosure and several of the sulcatas developed something. It could very well be a herpes virus. The Russians seem perfectly healthy and show no ill effects, but I lost several of the baby sulcatas. They developed growths on their skin (and some even on the shell). Herpes? maybe.
