I have a male Russian tortoise that is about 4.5 inches long. I was told he was captive bred and 2 or 3 years old, but then I found out this wasn't true, so I was wondering for his approximate age and things to look for. Thanks Eric for the input. I want as much info and opinions as possible, and that post is kinda old. Anyone else have any ideas? Also, Eric, are there any ages you can rule out? He's not full grown yet, is he? Here's what Eric said:
":As a general rule of thumb most tortoises reach their accepted full size in about 15 years or so, they keep growing after that but is extremely slow, and there are exceptions. Also young tortoises tend to grow faster than older tortoises. With this in mind a tortoise grows something like 1/4 its accepted mature size every 5 years. Again this is an estimate only. So, I would guess that your Russian is 10 yrs old at the minimum.
You also have to take into account that the tortoise is wild caught, and wild caught animals don't grow as fast or grow as large as healthy captive bred animals do. "
