I know that me not spending money at Petco on a Russian tortoise isn't going to stop Petco from stocking them and it won't stop the wild caught trade. But I do know that *I* have not helped support the wild caught trade.
Right now, there are more people that want to buy a cheap tortoise than there are tortoises in stock, so the tortoise will probably get sold whether or not I buy it.
The rationale for some people is - if they go in and buy them from Petco, at least they will be giving them a good home and preventing them some misery from going to an uninformed home.
That is fine; whatever works for you.
The question of wc or cb? will be no longer be relevant as they are an exhaustible resource.
I am sure they will eventually be CITES protected like practically every other tortoise we love.
