: I am thinking about buying a sulcata tortoise. The problem is that I live in New Jersey. What time of year can it safely live outside for? When i have to bring it inside how big of an enclosure will i have to make for an adult? How long will it take a 6 inch baby to reach adult hood? These answers plus any other help would be apreciated.
I have one that was about 2 inches when i got her and is now, 1 1/2 years later, well over 4 inches. I have read that as with mine they can easily double in size every year. I live in Nebraska so I am dealing with the housing issue also. Indoors is not a good place for them to be, a determined adult tort that weighs 50 pounds can easily go right through drywall so I am constructing something like this: a 10'x10' foot box with 2' tall sides made from plywood, on a concrete floor in my basement, lined with hay of course. This will not last more than a few years i suspect so maybe then i will line all the walls of my basement with plywood??
