A lot of people take in a fecal sample twice a year.
I admit that I've been lax and haven't always taken a sample in that frequently. I haven't had to deworm mine, luckily.
However, when I was at the vet last, he showed me the worms found in the intestinal tract during a necropsy of a desert tortoise. He had a jar with a good 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup of worms in it. He told me the tortoise appeared healthy to the owners, had normal looking feces, etc. Basically it was asymptomatic but eventually died from complications from those worms.
