Russians

Hi all:

I currently have a Leopard Tort. However, at the local big huge corporate chain pet store (no names, however) they have a couple of Russians that are breaking my heart. Although they're housed in relatively nice accommodations at the store, it kills me to watch them because their food is given to them in these high-sided pans that they strain to climb in order to eat. You'd absolutely want to cry watching them stretch their necks and poke out their tongues to try and grab a little food (which looks less than optimum).

Anyway, the price on them has dropped like a rock (they're marked down from $70 to $20) and I might want to get one, if for no other reason than to give it a good feeding or two. However, I know that Russians need to hibernate. What information can someone supply me on:

1) How to hibernate a tortoise in an apartment? (Obviously, as I own a Leopard Tort, I'm pretty ignorant on the hibernation thing.)

2) Whether anyone has had any luck with Russians purchased from large, faceless, greedy corporate pet store chains (no names again)?

Thanks in advance for your advice.
