I live in SE Louisiana and have successfully kept 3 toeds and gulf coast box turtles. They are outdoors year round and do well with hibernating as they are native to my area. I am considering getting a couple of russian tortoises and am wondering if they are compatible with this area. We do get the occasional frost or freeze in the winter, no snow, and the temps can get into the 90's in the summer months. I know they estivate when the temp gets too high. Is anyone familiar enough with my conditions to offer some advice. I have a large area outdoors to house them. Most of the local herp societies deal mainly with snakes, so please let me know what you think. Also, where can I get captive bred russians? Thanks to all.
