When I bought my Russian tortoise a month ago at a very reputable and large pet store chain (no names mentioned) I was given quite a bit of wrong information. For one thing, I was told that corn cob stuff made good subtrate and found out the hard way that it wasn't (thanks for the warnings but they were too late. I found out in his droppings...not pretty. anyway, no worry, he is okay now!). I was also told that tanks were the best way to house them, but luckily previous research told me that fish tanks are very bad for housing! When I asked about males and females, they told me that the way to tell if they're male is in reality the way to tell if they're female and vice versa (all the torts there were male, but I was told they were all female. I'm okay with male though.). Since a lot of people new to torts come here (I did!) I thought I would post to warn you to do lots of research and always make sure you get your info from more than one source.
