The spineless variety is great. I found one plant in the yard of a house about to be pulled down, the cactus looked almost dead but I just stuck it in the earth in a dryer area of my yard and it's huge now!
I also did as EJ suggested planted a couple of pads, also outside in a dryer area. They too took off and in just two years have grown very large.
I just twist the pads of the plant using an old oven mit. Then rinse them under cold water and scrub lightly with a dish scrubby, works great for getting the tiny spikes of.
