New Jersey is not the best of states for a sulcata. Adults really need to be housed outside, unless you like keeping animals that will make your house smell like a cow is living in it. An adult would need a whole bedroom when living inside and that would be small for it. The age that it reaches adulthood will all depend on how you feed it and house it when it is little. My sulcata is on the small size, she is 6 inches 28oz. and almost 5 years old. But a 5 year old can also weigh over 10 pounds and be about 12 inches. I live were it is warm but I am sure others will give you suggestions of how they house their sulcatas inside. It will be easy to house it inside when it is small but it is good you are thinking of the future, many buyers don't.

: I am thinking about buying a sulcata tortoise. The problem is that I live in New Jersey. What time of year can it safely live outside for? When i have to bring it inside how big of an enclosure will i have to make for an adult? How long will it take a 6 inch baby to reach adult hood? These answers plus any other help would be apreciated.
