In Reply to: is my baby sulcata going to die?!?! please help! posted by gubugi on June 04, 2000 at 02:22:50:
: hey guys...
i think it's a bit older than a hatchling.
how big is he? measure the plasteron from head to tail to let us know.
: since i've brought it over to my place, it's diet has gone down drastically.
what are you feeding?
the eye problem they said was probably a result of a vitamin deficiency...
while its true vitamin deficiency can cause swollen eyes, and calcium defiency can cause swollen limbs and soft shells, I suspect this is not the main problem. Dietary defiencies take a while to show their ramifications. I suggest you take him to a knowledgeable vet ASAP to rule out respitory infections, an indication of which can be swollen or sunken eyes and reduced appitite in the early stages.
: i've also noticed that the bottom shell is very soft. i think that the sides may be a bit soft as well (is this part due to the soaking? not sure....)
the temps seem a bit high to me, but then again I'm not a sulcata keeper so I guess I wouldn't know, but I do keep a leopard tort aand his enclosre gets about 88-90 degrees day temp, 880-85 at night. Also, if this is a hatchling, you may want to leave water available at all times in a SHALLOW container, if I am not mistaken young torts need more acess to water than adults.
Again, I do stress a visit with your vet, do not wait on potential health problems, they don't get better by themselves. Good luck, keep us posted!!

: any suggestions? i also would like to know what kind of setup i can look into as i only have it in a relatively small bin for now... any detailed plans? diet recommendations? etc?
