In an earlier post in 'sulcata question' there was a couple of items that should be addressed. It is not know if oversupplementation is harmful. There are certain vitamins that are not water soluable so they tend to accumulate in the system of the tortoise. Many vets believe this is not good and that generally speaking herpers as a group tend to over supplement. Once a week a very light dusting is guessed to be more than adequate.
Water in tortoises seems to be a very misjudged component. I beleive it is very inmortant and should be available at all times.
'Normal' growth is very subjective. Look at the percentage of growth. 1/2 inch in a 1 inch turtle is a good amount. Even that amount in a 4 inch tortoise is a good deal.
A cool down period is yet another very subjective topic. If you have a steady temperature without a thermostat you are going to get a drop in temperature at night regardless. Whether this is necessary or not is a matter of opinion.
Finally, the stuff you read on the internet and even the self published stuff should be read with a very open mind. This literature is neither peer reviewed nor, in some cases, edited. This post is no exception.
