It is a gopher tortoise. they are the only species in florida. your description matches exactly. heather and terry are right, they do get big. here is a pic of a female gopher that wandered though my yard a few weeks ago. She was a foot long. let the tortoise go. It's illegal to even touch them w/o permission from fish and game. They also need lots of room. An adult can live in about 15-30 burrows, that are several feet deep and very long (most are over 20 ft.) I doubt you can provide an enclosure large enogh, even it they weren't illegal. Please let it go. Take it back to exactly where you found it (well, not exactly, you should put it a little bit off the road);-). Good luck, and remember to put it on the side of the road it was going towards, otherwise it will try to cross again.
