Wow, you guys have been as busy as I have! lol! I had
a basic poster, "Tortoises & Turtles from around the World"
and briefly explained the differences between Tortoises = land
and Turtles = water (some or totally) -as in aquatic or semi-aquatic
depended on the age, every kid in the elementary school went
by my table.
I put little signs by some of the prominant collectables I have
as to the country of origin. Everybody liked the Mexican one
a lot, it's very pretty with birds painted on it and brightly
colored fushia and green. Also the kids all noticed and commented
on the model of the tortoise hatching out of the egg, they liked
that and many didn't know they came from eggs.
A few kids of course told me "they had a turtle but it died"
(I expected this and smiled and told them "yeah that happens
a lot cause people aren't sure how to take care of them, but
I'm going to do a pet care class sometime.) I was also going
to bring MY TORTOISE in sometime. I left Ted at home, not wanting
to tell 500 kids they can't pet him. I could do something more
in a classroom setting where it's a small group, this was
the whole school. I think it went really well.
I had thought of putting up a computer site address, but do not know
the legalities of this????? Everybody likes turtles it seems
and I think the whole thing left a positive impression. Thanks
to all for ideas, had to go with the circumstances available.
(I left the real box turtle shell home, didn't want to hear "eww gross"
and I'll save that for a small setting.) This is also my last week
teaching, I'm ready for a break too!!! niki
