: I live in the Tampa Bay area of Fla and today I was out riding my bike when i saw a tortoise trying to cross the road. I went out and picked him up so he wouldnt get hit. He is 10 inches long and 8 inches wide, his shell is humped about the same as a russian tortoise. His carapace is nearly solid brown with very light mottling. His feet tail and head are nearly black with no pattern. the tail is extremely tiny, about half an inch. Does nyone know what kind of tortoise this is and how big it gets? He is in a 3 foot cardboard boxright now, very calm and loves his head stroked. I plan on putting him with my savvannah monitor in a 7 by 3.5 foot enclosure, is this ok?? My monitor is only 6 inches so i think ill wait till hes near a foot before i put them together though. thanks for any help u can give.
Uh oh man, reconsider your plans. If the shell is a dark blue to black you may be breaking the law. That tortoise could be a gopher tortoise which is protected, so I would let it go back in the wild. however, check on the internet. Who knows, it might be a sulcatta. Also, don't stick it with a monitor, bad things have happened before with combos like that.
