How about.
Turtles and Tortoises lived amoung dinosuars.
That would get their attention.
You could go on to explain that chelonians were around in the Triassic period over 185 million years ago.
But that they may have been around even further back 250 million years ago.
But certainly during the jurassic period, when marine turtles would come ashore and lay their eggs as they do today.
Not the sea turtles we know today but their ancestors.
I believe that fossils from the Triassic period ( 220 million years ago) found in Gemany are the earliest fossils found that closely resemble modern chelonia. Although many differences are still present, one being teeth!

: This year for the elementary school festival day, I'm doing
: a table on Turtles/Tortoises (instead of Spiders which I know
: a little more about, just have done it already enough times and
: they wanted something new). It'll be on Tuesday all day, and
: I wanted to ask you guys, if you could do a simple one liner
: poster to put up; what would you put on it??
: Tortoises and Turtles are.....
: This will be a non-complicated simple display so I was looking
: for a simple message for children. I'll be taking some of my
: Tortoise/Turtle/Sea Turtle replicas too, (I hear you snickering
: Sonja!) lol! and probably the box turtle real shell with
: the backbone visible. I'm going to make up a poster this
: weekend. Have a nice weekend all too! niki
