Hello Toby -
you can check the following "Turtles of the World" web site - it has the funcationality to show you specific localities where a species is found (on a map of Madagascar). That is, the two species of Pyxis, but not the three subspecies of arachnoides.
http://bufo.geo.orst.edu/turtle/index.html
Also, for information on Pyxis arachnoides, you might try the stud book:
http://home.kabelfoon.nl/~loehr/pyxis/index.htm
This has the most information regarding arachnoides that I've yet found (and I've looked pretty hard).
For information on which zoological institutions maintiain this species in captivity (including which subspecies), ISIS is a good source:
http://www.isis.org/abstract/Abs47874.htm
Please feel free to email me directly => I'd also like to find out what you found so far, as I'm also researching this species. Looks like a lot of Pyxis are coming in this year, although there's speculation that Madagascar may close down next year, since they've (apparently) so radically exceeded their CITIES quota. Personally, given the habitat destruction in Madagascar and the propensity of the indigenous people to eat them (especially recent immigrants, apparently) I don't think that importing them is a bad thing. Hopefully we can establish some viable colonies over here and (hopefully) the price will discourage too many beginners from trying this genus. From what I've read, seems as though incubation parameters are still unknown, although some sources indicate a day-night temperature flucuation is necessary. Please correctly me if I'm wrong on this, but the only information I've managed to obtain on successful captive hatchings referenced a zoo in Madagascar itself.
Earlier someone posted that Pyxis arachnoides brygooi was the most common subspecies - this is contrary to everything I've found on the species (including the studbook and ISIS). Anyone care to comment on this?
Thanks,
Scott Alexander
