: They could be raised for much less than they sell for in the US, but, their is not enough profit in it for people to do so. So, the question then becomes...at what point is it profitable enough to raise them, instead of importing them?

Hi all, I saw the multitude of posts and after reading them I wanted to make one comment. I DO raise T. horsfieldii. These tortoises only lay 2 to 4 eggs in a clutch (they are really BIG eggs). Compare this to the sulcattas that will lay 30 eggs at a time and then throw in the "4 inch" law and I think you can see the problems. It takes 3 years to raise a baby Russian to legal size (I don't PUSH my babies). (Yes, folks, there are some shows that insist on LEGAL). I know there are other people who breed these charming tortoises besides me (classified ads in my local chapter of California Turtle and Tortoise Club). The numbers of babies being produced is small, but they are there. Price runs around $65 to $100.
And when will the imports stop?: when they run out of tortoises. 2 to 4 eggs every other year is not enough to replinish the wild population.
