In Reply to: Many human calcium supplements are oyster shell based...N/P posted by Heather on May 25, 2000 at 00:09:36:
Just because many human calcium suppliments use oyster shells does not make them effective or even safe. There has been studies showing that many fibromialgia cases are linked to unabsorbable calcium. Oyster source calcium has a high "metalic based" calcium. This is hard for the body to break down. The excess calcium stores in the soft tissue of the body ie;heart, muscles, joints etc...
Humans have a very agressive digestive tract with acids, enzymes and micro flora, to help aid in breaking down and disolving some pretty nasty stuff. I do not believe tortoises have the same system as we do. It is my understanding that they rely on fermentation to a certain level. Fermentation cannot break down metalic minerals. This is why grasses and other plant matter is better for them. The minerals in plants are more colloidal.Alfalfa and timothy hay are loaded with colloidal minerals, over 70 .
I would not give my tortoise any calcium with a oyster or calcium carbonate base to it.Most tortoise calcium is JUNK!!!!
Give your tortoise a citrical or calcium citrate suppliment. This can be found at any health food store.More important than vitamin D would be magnesium and malic acid. Vitamin D is usually in the form of colcalciferal(spelling?)A common rat poison. Too much Vitamin D will actually strip the calcium out of the bones and into the blood stream and soft organs, causing organ failure and death. A painfull death.
Best source of vitamin D is still from the way God meant it. The sun.( or lots of lighting)
