: I have a spoiled spur thigh named Cornelius aka Cornywho I want to spoil it by giving it edible flowers along with it's primary diet of romaine lettuce, some fruits, and other vegetarian diet. However, I do not know what flowers to feed my Corny. I because it is spring here in Rhode Island I want to grow my own flowers and feed it to corny. Can anyone suggest to me any edible flowers for Conelius???

Hey man,

Edible flowers are a good thing to enter into the mix. If you are refering to the Sulcata Tortoise
which the proper name is "African Spurred" (spur thighed does describe them and is a common name,
but it's confusing if the scientific name isn't specified)you should be most concerned about varying it's diet quite a bit. Romaine as a staple will work, but if your tortoise is young
you will probably hurt it in the future by feeding
the bulk of it'd diet romaine. You need to think about the nutritional value of the food you are giving your tortoise and also the calcium to phosporous ratio (leaning of course to a higher calcium level). I feed my Sulcatas Johnny Jump Ups, and Hibiscus. Hibiscus is the biggest winner
they will tunnel to your neighbors yard if they
smell one ( trust me, I know..lol), I also get a mixed flowers shipment from a FROO FROO grocery
store with alot of other types. You may want to contact a feed store and get bale of Orchard Grass
Hay to mix in the greens. I would recommend Orchard Grass hay any day of the week over any other food or vitamin supplement in the known world for a Geochelone Sulcata.

Now, if your talking about the Mediterranean spur
thighed tortoise (Testudo graeca)Go here www.tortoise.org/cttc1.html, because I don't know a friggin thing about them..lol..Except that I wish they would change the common name.

Ciao and good luck,

Giovanni
