The problem is that either everything goes or nothing goes. CITES appendix II means that the country of origin is given the final word on whether or not that country wants to allow the animals to be exported. Unfortunately that usually means that none can be exported or anything goes. It is becoming increasingly hard for breeders to compete with importers due to all the rules, regulations, restrictions, permits, licenses, taxes, fees, certificates, etc. that are required. We need to support legislation that will allow the legal sale or distribution of captive-bred turtles and tortoises. We need to set an example and educate the public concerning our responsibility. We are loosing ground on our freedom to keep reptiles in captivity. Education, responsible legislation, responsible actions on the part of the hobbyists, and compliance with current laws is essential.
