Aloha Barbara!
if fed exclusively or in excess.
I have unfortunately experienced this. The first sulcata I ever had was given six months at most to live. This diagnosed by a very respected exotic vet here on Oahu.
Due to a high protein diet both the kidney and liver were failing. This vet is very experienced with tortoises, and has dissected a few in his day including sulcatas. In his words, *I would take this poor animal back and ask them to return your money.I see this time and time again, due to their diet the kidney and liver are totaly shot*
We had purchased the tortoise two days prior to the vet visit, which included full blood work up.
The tortoise had been fed a high protein diet, with no access ever to grass or any other more natural foods.
This experience broke my heart, I cried for nearly a week.
Aloha,
Terry.
Hi again, Terry!!
: I also have not seen any symptoms of these afflictions in my tortoises despite the use of primate chow as part of their diet... I guess the problem with a discussion like this is we don't want to have any of our living, active, healthy tortoises dissected to find out!!!!
