Hi Barbara,
sorry if it read that way, that wasn't what I was suggesting. Just stating that torts that have access to natural foods and the outdoors will be healthier than those kept indoors on a high protein, fatty diet.
Anyway debates like this are a good thing I think, through this debate and the ones on the lists, I have a better understanding of various tortoise issues.Although not a very experienced keeper, I have learned a lot since I got my first tortoise.
I still believe that protein rich foods are responsible for pyramiding, but that environment and other causes also factor in.
I have followed the advise of some very experienced chelonia keepers, and have seen excelent results. So in turn this is the advise I offer to new keepers.
I don't believe this is causing any harm. As I've yet to see any reports of a high fiber grazing diet, suplemented with other edible weeds and plants and available drinking water, plus calcium and vitamin supplements, being harmful to a grazing herbivore such as a sulcata. We can't all agree on everything, so it is up to the individual to come to their own conclusions.
But both sides deserve to be heard.
Aloha,
Terry.
: I don't think that Richard, in his message, advocated keeping tortoises only indoors and feeding them only tortoise chow, and certainly neither do I, nor have I ever.
