In Reply to: Protein doesn't cause pyramiding! posted by Richard Fife on May 19, 2000 at 11:00:38:
:I thought I would put in my two cents worth, if I am wrong I appologize. I was always under the impression that pyramiding was caused by a lack of calcium in the diet- not enough to make a smooth shell, less calcium means smaller growth rings on the scutes. A diet high in protien means faster growth and this generally means a need for greater calcium intake. So high protein doesn't cause pyramiding, instead it is one of the factors in pyramiding the other factor being calcium intake.
However-- a diet high in animal protein can cause numerous other problems including fatty liver and reptilian gout. I would recommend a diet high in fibre with many mixed greens and animal protein (and possibly plant protein) kept to a minimum.
