No offence taken Ed.
I don't know what this sulcatas complete diet was, only that bananas were included in it. The seller also recommended feeding, brocoli, corn, apples, cabbage all fruits and veggies basicly.
It was a sad situation, we later learnt that with all the wonderful weather out here and most yards having plentiful grass, he was kept in a concrete and dirt enclosure.
I mentioned the banana because the seller said to us ' do you realise a sulcata can eat a whole bunch of bananas a day?"
I think it was his way of saying can you afford to feed a sulcata?!!!
Funny question to ask somebody who paid over $1000
for the tort in question.
And sad too when there is so much natural food available over here, right in the yard. We spend very little on grocery foods to supplement our tortoises diet.
No doubt though that his liver and kidneys were close to failing.
It broke our hearts to give him back.
Interestingly, we had him for 2 days and during that time he didn't pass one stool or any urates.
When we got Angel our next sulcata her stools were a mess, runny, pale and full of chunks of wood.
She had been housed indoors and fed only Mazuri tortoise chow, I think she was chewing on the wood to get fiber. She also came with health problems , bladder stones so large and solid I thought she was passing an egg.
I think that both diet and environment play a part in pyramiding, though how big a part each play I have no idea.
All I know is that the 2 sulcatas I have that were housed indoors and fed a high protein diet, both show pyramiding.
Both these sulcatas were imported from the mainland, from colder states.Since they've been housed outdoors and put on a grazing diet, the pyramiding has dramaticly improved. The two that have perfect carapaces are local bred and have lived their entire life outdoors, grazing and such.
What played the most important role in this improvement, diet or environment, I don't know.
So have to believe it is a bit of both.
Anyway no offence taken, I should have explained the situation in more detail.
I never said your experience doesn't mean much. I said your banana/liver experience doesn't support the conclusion you stated. No offense.
