: Protein doesn’t cause pyramiding!>>>>>
I believe that an excessive amount of protein in the diet can cause pyramiding. It may not be the
entire cause of the problem, but it adds to it.
I also believe that environment does play a factor in pyramiding too.
Two of my sulcatas have pyramiding, one smaller sulcata woirse than the larger male.
Both these tortoises were housed indoors and on a high protein diet.
Since living with us the pyramiding is greatly reduced.
So much so on the large female that it is barely noticable, this in just two years.
She has been housed outdoors these two years and on a more natural grazing diet.
I don't know the history of the smaller sulcata, but I picked him up from a local pet store about a year ago, the diet in the store was terrible for a sulcata. Banana and iceburg mostly.
This one was heavily pyramided.
Now housed outdoors and on a natural diet, his pyramiding is also getting better.
So although a diet too high in protein rich foods might not be the only cause of pyramiding, I believe it does contribute to it.
Terry.
