With the increased popularity in tortoises I think a lot of people are getting the wrong idea. Tortoises are not a good substitute for a hamster. I have tortoises that come running over (well kinda running)when they see me and tortoises that like a scratch on the head, but I don't have any tortoises that actually like to be picked up, including my captive borns. Most Russians that are being sold are wild caught which makes them even more unsuitable as a hamster. After being born and living outdoors a kiddie pool in a bedroom is going to seem like a drag. If a tortoise is only going to be provided indoor accommodations I would highly recommend a captive born specimen although I really think we owe tortoises sunshine and fresh air.
