: :counting scutes is just a myth! my sulcata's are only about five months old and they have four rings! russians are very hard to tell. since most are wild caught, their shells look more scratched up and older to me than captive bred turtles. my russians are four and five inches long. they are mature enough to breed though. they can be six to nine inches long when adults. this probably doesn't help you much, but the pet store also told me mine was a year old. by the looks of him (just guessing) i figure they are anywhere from tghree to seven years old.
