There are close to 1000 different E.coli serotypes and only a small number of these are responsible for the deadly food-related outbreaks that you hear about in the news. It's quite unlikely that the organism isolated from the lungs is one of those strains; however any strain of E.coli can cause infection if it gets into an area of the body where it doesn't belong.
