: I wanted to do some reseach to see if a tortoise would be a good pet for kids?
A tortoise is a great pet for kids, just understand that you will need to help them a great
deal in understanding how to take care of them. Tort's are pretty much a "watch" type of pet then
one that will do tricks or run to the door and jump you when you get home, like a dog (although
my big sulcata will pin me down if I have a mustard green leaf in my hand..lol).I would for your sake make sure they are interested in them
enough before getting them one.
I also need to find out what tortoise would be best? We live in California near San Franciso.
San Francisco is a pretty cold city I lived out that way for 10 years. You should probably get a
tort that isn't going to grow much bigger than 7
to 8 inches, that way you can house it inside for
most of the year.
We have a play yard that is 12' x 22 and has a 4" high boarder. My kids do not use this are much. Can a tortoise climb over this 4" high board.
Tortoises are great escape artists, and 4 inches
is a good escape height. Nothing that couldn't be cured with a little plastic fencing and some stakes.
This is important becasue I have a pool in the back yard. Please help for the tortoises sake!
Hope that helps.
Ciao'
Giovanni
