Kelly,
it doesn't surprise me that it's mostly leopards that are coming into your care.
One Pet Store chain has been importing Leopard Torts in large numbers.
Most are wild caught and not only severely stressed and loaded with parasites.
But are then purchased by people who have only the Pets stores advise on their care to go on. This info is often incorrect and the tortoise then suffers even further, due to incorrect husbandry.

It's a sad situation that the stores care more about money than the care and health of the animals.
Anyway best of luck with your rescue efforts, my best asvise to you would be to set up separate enclosures for each tortoise. Make sure that there is no contact whatsoever, until at least six months after you aquire them.( I'm sure you know this already, but no harm in repeating it)
Rescue is tough as some of the tortoises will already be beyond saving, I know you have experienced this already.
But the ones that pull through and then go on to live a healthier, happier life will make it all worth while.
Terry.

: I will cerently pass the info along to my vet, thanks. I have joined this list mostly because I am new to tortoise rescue, my longest tort(red-foot)I've had about 1 1/2 years. i usually do box turtles. I have seen an increasing number of tortoises lately being given up. I do not know much about leopards, but 3 have been "dumped" within the last 6 weeks. I am trying some different husbandry techniques with this new one based on info I've found on this list and member sites, as well as on tortoise trust. (their message board is hard to use!!) I am more familiar with red and yellow foots, so any info you can pass my way is terriffic!! We never stop learning...:)kelly
