I don't know who you are refering to when you mention that some people assume they are the only one's qualified to take care of a tortoise. But, Sharif not only managed to insult most of the regulars by stating that the species of tortoise they keep are for beginners. But also made the outlandish statement that he knows more than most about torts, then failed to answer some very basic questions.

Most of the new posters at this forum are beginners looking for help and advise. Giving them an answer based on personal opinion and experience and providing links to helpful web sites, will in turn help them.
If you don't agree with the advise given you can post a message offering alternative advise, without attacking the other posters.

Some children are far more responsible than others when it comes to taking care of pets.
To say that all children will lose interest, mishandle or mistreat the pet is incorrect.
Just as saying that any 5-8 year old is mature and responsible enough to take on the full care of a pet, is incorrect.
Yet each opinion is important as each child and situation is different.
I agree that we could have got this point across without all the bickering and insults about the species of tortoises each of us keep. And level of knowledge we do or don't have!
Terry.

<<< i'm a little tired of everyone on the forum assuming they are the only ones qualified to take care of a tortoise and no one else in the world should get one! A lot of people on this site are knowledgable and many more people could be if they are willing to do research and they aren't chased off the forum by everyone yelling back and forth. lets stick to answering newcomer's questions and HELPING them out instead of offending them!>>>>
