There are at least 10 species and 9 subspecies of
South American Wood Turtles. Some aquatic, some semi aquatic, some terrestrial.
Terrestrial species include:
Rhinoclemmys annulata:
Rhinoclemmys pulcherrima:
Rhinoclemmys rubida:
and the semi terrestrial Rhinoclemmys areolata.
I suspect that the turtles/tortoises you saw were a species/sub-species of South American wood turtle, mislabled as a tortoise.
Unless they were Geochelone chilensis (the Chaco tortoise).
A more detailed description would help.
Terry.
: does anyone have information on the South American Wood Tortoise.. not turtles but tortoises?? I have never heard of them before until I saw them in a petshop yesterday.. The store guy says they get like 12-18".. Have I just been blind not to see these before????
