Personally, I do not recommend sulcata for a first tortoise, because new tortoise owners are simply not prepared for their immense size.(hearing 150 plus pounds and SEEING 150 plus pounds are very differnt things)Red foots can be more managable size-wise, but perhaps a smaller species such as a russian, would be a good place to start.
