Anyway, Giovanni is right...the longer you can keep your torties off of it the better. I know that doesn't help much. I realize how tough this would be because spring is here, summer is on its way and tortoises want to get on the grass.

Here are my ideas
1. You don't say what kind of tortoises you have but can you put something temporary out for them to go in like kiddy pools or something? I know they are unattractive, but at least you could put them outside safely.
2. Call the company that makes the fertilizer and talk to someone in their research department. Ask them about absorbtion rates, how long is in the grass leaves, etc. Ask them how long you should keep the tortoises off and double the time period they give you as safe.
3. I read this somewhere, and I do not know if it is true, have not used this method, and do not endorse it...so
I read that if you aerate the soil, heavily water the treated grass, let it grow long, then mow it down short, that after 3 cycles of this it should be safe for your tortoise to go on. Again, I haven't done this, only read it in some tortoise info...can't even find the info now.

But you know if you are in a pinch and you are afraid they will get lost confined to the other part of the yard, you have to weigh your options.

In the mean time, can you temporarily fence them in the smaller area and block off the deck until you figure out what to do?
