Althogh aesthetially pleasing, they don't have to have grass substrate. Actually grass can sometimes make an outdoor enclosure too humid for a tortoise like sulcata or CDTs. If you can provide shade, some edible plants and a secure pen, outside is far superior to inside, especially since you are in Southern CA.
Is 80 degrees too hot for my sulcata or too cold? 80 degrees is too hot for the cool section of your enclosure.
80 degrees is too cool for the hot section of your enclosure.
Does that make sense? Your inside enclosure should vary from about 70-85 degrees, 70 on the cool side, 85 on the hot side, and should have one spot hotter than that under a basking lamp.
