There are many dif. types of ants in this world. Some of the most common are fire ants, pavement ants, carepenter ants, pharoah ants, thief ants, argentine ants. There is one thing that all ants have in common. They all have very select food requirements. If you know the specis you will be able to find out what they like to eat. Some like sweets. Some like protiens. some like sweets some of the time and then sweets the rest of the time.
How do you know what specis you are dealing with?
You can bring a sample to your local AG dept for ID or to the local university exstention ofice. Some health dept. will ID bugs for you.
Protien baits can be made with peanut butter and boric acid.Mix creamy peanut butter with boric acid 1part boric acid to 20 parts peanut butter.Mix in non food container. If you must soften p.bttr do so before adding BA. (Stroger is not better)
Sweet baits can be made with the same ratio of mint apple jelly to boric acid. MIX AND STORE IN NON FOOD CONTAINER LABELED COUTION POISON DO NOT TOUCH!!!!!
Fierst you must try to find the nest. Follow ants back to nest. If you cannot find nest try putting out sugar or bread crumbs and follow the ants back.Place bait in small dish(baby food lid) as close to nest out of reach of pets and children. If you must place bait in smaller areas place bait in two inch sec. of straws and place along edges of carpetting if indoors or allong foundation out doors.Remember ants prefer to travel along straight edges instead of crows flight to nest. Side walk, landscape timbors, down spouts, power lines etc...
If you do not know the ant you are dealing with try alittle bit of both baits.Boric Acid is the lowest toxicity of the poisons I know of. It is in laundry detergents, fertilizers, paper products and is also used in medical aplications. How ever it is a mineral and can be dangerous in large ammounts. Please use common sense and be carefull.
Try to also keep the tortiose enclosure as clean as you can.
Ants can spread germs from one area to another so do not tink they are totally harmless.
: : I have an outdoor pen with a few redfoot tortises. The pen seems to have an ant problem. The ants are not attacking the tortises, but they are everywhere. How can I de-ant the pen without harming the turtles. All advice is appreciated.
: : Thanks
