: Anyone have experience raising Desert Tortoises outside their range? Indoors? Any info. you could give would be greatly appreciated.

i have two of them. going on eight years now. they are wonderful. they are really friendly. i semi hibernate them each year.. our zoo director says he lost several each year trying to hibernated them thru the winter. i have a huge pen for them. i have a 6 foot chain link fence with the first 18 inches solid so they can't see out to prevent pacing. i have a huge cement tube they like to sleep in. i have grasses, clovers, hay, dandelions, carrots (and weeds) growing back there. they have everything from a sandy area, to dirt, to an area covered with clovers. they have a couple of bushes to hide under. i watch the temperatures, if its going to be under 45, i bring them in. i feed them in addition to their grazing area shredded carrots, mustard greens, squashes, minimal fruit and cactus. if you have any other questions, email me and i'll help you out. i know heather on this forum also has them.
